Myopia (Short Sight)

200 medical students and junior doctors attended a Regional Teaching Day organised by, LaserVision’s very own, Rakesh Jayaswal in which he lectured on the subject of cornea and refractive surgery.

The teaching day took place on the 24^th March at the Wessex Deanery and was aimed at students who are keen in pursuing a career in eye surgery. One medical student commented that the day was both “educational and inspiring” – a great success for Rakesh!

On January 21st Mike Tappin, a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Laser Vision, was invited to speak at the European Eye Bank Association’s annual meeting – this year taking place in Rotterdam.

The Association is formed for the advancement of eye banking. Its mission is to help provide tissues and cells of optimum quality and safety for transplantation and the treatment of eye diseases, according to the highest medical and scientific standards, and making them available to as many patients in need as possible in an ethical and humanitarian way.

The main focus of the 2012 EEBA Meeting lay on all aspects of lamellar keratoplasty, ranging from techniques for surgical pre-dissection of corneal donor tissue to clinical outcomes. Mike spoke at the event about an innovative instrument he has devised to assist in corneal transplant operations. This instrument is a prototype endothelial inserter.

This summer, Laser Vision’s very own, Mike Tappin will be taking on the challenge of a 210 mile cycle ride.

Mike and his friends Bernard, Charlie and Tim will begin the journey at Seven Hills on 29^th June and hope to finish at Surrey Hills on 1^st July.

The team hope to raise £3,000 for Brigitte Trust.
